Stop Kartarpur corridor work, says Swamy
CHANDIGARH: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP in Rajya Sabha, Subramanian Swamy on Saturday said work on the Kartarpur corridor project should be stopped in the interest of the nation and there should be no talks with Pakistan on any issue.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a seminar, ‘Vacation of Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir’, organised by Sanskritik Gaurav Sanstan, a sister organisation of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, on Saturday, Swamy said, “Pakistan’s intentions behind allowing the construction of the corridor are not good; it can be used for anti-India activities. The neighbouring country should not be given any excuse, including the Kartarpur corridor project, for any talks.”

The corridor, connecting the Sikh shrines of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib (in Punjab, India) and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur (in Punjab, Pakistan) was proposed to allow religious devotees from India to visit the gurdwara in Kartarpur.

When told that there are strong sentiments in favour of corridor, Swamy said, “The sentiments should be respected but at the same time, people should be made aware that the current situation is not conducive for its construction.”

Known for airing controversial views, which often land his party in trouble, Swamy added, “These are my personal views and not that of the party.”

Amritsar Fuming over Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy’s statement on Kartarpur corridor, Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal on Saturday stated the BJP MP was creating hurdles in the way of the corridor.

Swamy, who was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar in Chandigarh, had said work on the Kartarpur corridor should be stopped in the interest of the nation and there should be no talks with Pakistan on any issue.

Taksal chief Harnam Singh Khalsa termed the statement non-serious and irresponsible, stating that the BJP MP was playing with the sentiments of the Sikh community. “At a time when Sikhs are desperately waiting to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, which is the last resting place of Guru Nanak, such a statement is unnecessary. Punjab is a border state and hopes for better ties with Pakistan,” he said.

Khalsa further said, “If there is any apprehension from the security point of view, intelligence agencies of the country are competent enough to deal with the situation. Swamy should not forget that the corridor is a long pending demand of the Sikhs. So, I appeal to the Union government to complete the work on the Indian side of the corridor as soon as possible.
