New Delhi : Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar on Friday said that he has applied for an Indian passport months after his Canadian citizenship came under the spotlight after he conducted a “non-political interview” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of this summer’s national elections.

“I have now applied for the [Indian] passport. It hurts me that people only hold on to this thing [that I hold a Canadian passport]. I am a Hindustani, an Indian and to prove my nationality, if I have to show this small thing [Indian passport], it hurts me,’’ Kumar said at the 17th Hindustan Times Leadership Summit

He added that his wife, Twinkle Khanna, children, Aarav and Nitara, and everyone else in his family are Indians. “I pay my taxes here and my life is here [in India]. So I do not want to give that chance to anyone now, and hence, I shall be getting my Indian passport soon.”

Kumar shared stage with Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor Khan at the summit and the two talked about films, their journey and narrated interesting anecdotes.

He explained he acquired the Canadian citizenship when he was thinking of an alternative career as 14 of his films flopped in a row.

“One of my closest friends, who is an Indian but stays in Canada told me, ‘come here and we will work together’. So, I started the process to get a Canadian passport because I felt my career is over and I would not get any work here in India. But when my 15th film worked well, I never looked back; life went on and the thought of changing my passport never crossed my mind.”

Khan spoke about how she has never conformed to the set norms.

She added whether it was getting married at the peak of her career or becoming a mother soon, she never thought about what others would say.

“It is not a crime to be in love. If nobody wants to work with me because I am married, then do not. I will do exactly what I want. Everyone said that your career is over, and I said be it. This is the person I want to be with and I am going to do it [get married]. So, it has been the best decision I have made as of now,’’ she said.

She added that after getting pregnant also, she was supposed to shoot a movie (Veere Di Wedding) and her team waited for nine months for her to be back. “Then also I was like this is the best decision to do the film with Rhea [Kapoor] and the film went on to be a success,” said Khan, who got married to actor Saif Ali Khan in 2012.

Kareena’s two-year-old son, Taimur Ali Khan, enjoys stardom like no other star kid. Talking about him, she added, “My son came along with me to the shoot. That was also the best decision. He has to know from the time he was born that his mother works. He has to learn to respect the fact that both his parents work and Saif told me if you want to continue working, you take him with you, keep him close to you and let him know what your job is. That is what I have done. So, Taimur is a brave boy.”

Kumar and Khan also happily responded to a request and shook a leg on Sauda Khara Khara song from their upcoming release, Good Newwz
