Gohana jinx: Parties suffer massive setbacks after holding rallies here?

It seems Gohana town of Sonipat district in Haryana has turned into a “jinx” for political parties who have suffered massive political setbacks after holding rallies in this small town locate on Panipat-Rohtak highway.

Holding political rallies in the city has proved to be “unlucky” for former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had organized two rallies in Gohana just before the parliamentary elections in November 2013 and May 2019. On both the occasions, Congress failed to make a comeback in the state. The state’s main opposition party, INLD, faced split after the October 2018 Gohana rally.

On November 10, 2013, just before the 2014 parliamentary polls, Hooda had held a massive rally — Congress Shakti rally — in Gohana and the party had claimed the presence of around 14 lakh people at that time. However, after the April 2014 parliamentary elections, Congress was reduced to one seat out of the 10 in the state, which was quite a climb-down from the nine it won in 2009.

On October 7, 2018, INLD had held a rally in Gohana to commemorate the 105th birth anniversary of its founder and former deputy PM Devi Lal. It was during this rally that Dushyant Chautala’s supporters had resorted to hooting when his (Dushyant) estranged uncle Abhay Chautala was speaking. Everything happened in the presence of party patriarch O P Chautala, who later disbanded the party’s youth wing and expelled his elder son Ajay and his sons Dushyant and Digvijay from the party. The incident later led to a split in the one of the most influential political families of the country. Dushyant later formed his own outfit — JJP.

INLD suffered a massive loss after that as several party MLAs joined other groups and the party lost the status of recognized opposition party in the state.

On May 10, 2019, Hooda had again held a rally in Gohana, just before the campaigning for 2019 parliamentary polls came to an end. Onlt, the Congress suffered a massive setback in the Lok Sabha polls and lost on all 10 seats. Both Hooda and his son Deepender failed to register a victory.
