Aurangabad:

A retired assistant commissioner of police, upset over the “maligning” of slain Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare in the Malegaon blast case, will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Bhopal against Pragya Singh Thakur.

The officer, Riyaz Deshmukh, filed nomination papers on Tuesday as an independent candidate. Deshmukh told TOI, “Soon after Pragya’s candidature was decided, I made up my mind to contest against her because I cannot see anyone maligning one of the finest and most upright officers in Maharashtra. Karkare guided me in professional matters and stood by me.”

Deshmukh retired as ACP from Amravati in 2016 and has lived in Aurangabad since. He served in the police force for over three decades. At the time of retirement, he was heading the Amravati crime branch. Before that, he was a crime branch inspector in Amravati. After retirement, he started a web portal and offered counselling in legal cases to civilians and serving policemen.

A sub-inspector from the 1986 batch, Deshmukh was posted as a probationary in Akola, where he served for 9 years. During this time, he came in contact with Karkare, who was posted as Akola SP in 1988. Deshmukh then headed Washim police station. He remained in touch with Karkare till the latter’s death on 26/11. Deshmukh said, “In Karkare, we lost one of our finest officers. He was a mentor to several juniors like me. He neither succumbed to pressure nor let his subordinates do so.” Deshmukh is banking on his network of sources, including retired cops in Bhopal for securing votes. He is trying to get the whistle as his symbol
