IIT-B’s B-school draws BJP fire for tweet, disowns it

A tweet posted from a Twitter “handle” of IIT-Bombay’s Shailesh J Mehta School of Management (SJMSoM) on Monday, saying “people here (from West Bengal) are not stupid enough to vote for BJP” raised hackles in some circles on social media. The tweet was in response to one by writer Shefali Vaidya.

IIT-Bombay management, though, said the account was managed by a group of students without the institute’s knowledge. The post was soon deleted and by evening the institute ordered that the account be deactivated too.

Earlier in the day, Vaidya had tweeted on a report on Amit Shah's campaign in West Bengal. It was in response to this tweet that a post on the handle @SJMSoM, purportedly of the management school, read: “Because Hinduism and Hindutva are not the same. Being religious and being stupid are two different things. People here maybe religious but not stupid enough to vote for BJP.”

The tweet was posted at 3.11pm and deleted soon after it was trolled. An hour later, a fresh post sought an apology and claimed that the account was compromised. “...The school neither endorses nor takes a political stand or viewpoint,” it said.

In a clarification issued by the institute, authorities said the “politically-coloured statement” did not come from an official IIT-Bombay handle.

“...The account seems to be compromised. The institute does not take any political standpoint and completely distances itself from such statements. The matter is being investigated and appropriate action will be taken,” said a spokesperson
