Chandigarh:

In a significant development, the tenure of special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh, who had convicted the Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, has been given extension by the Punjab and Haryana high court administration.

He is also hearing other high profile cases such as Manesar land scam, in which former chief minister Bhupinder Hooda and former senior bureaucrats are among 34 accused; and the AJL case where Hooda and Congress leader Motilal Vora are accused.

Sources in the high court also confirmed that name of another additional session judge rank officer, posted in southern district of Haryana, was under active consideration to replace Jagdeep Singh as the special CBI judge in Panchkula. However, because of some concerns, the high court administration decided to give Jagdeep an extension instead.

The 2012 batch Haryana superior judicial services (HSJS) officer was expected to be shifted in the transfer list of 52 judicial officers released late on Wednesday evening by the Punjab and Haryana high court administration.

His name, however, does not figure in the list. With this, it is expected that the judgment in the murder case of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh may also be announced by him as the trial of the case is also at the last stage.

Recognized as no-nonsense judicial officer in legal fraternity, Jagdeep shot into limelight in August 2017 when he sentenced the controversial Dera chief to 20-year imprisonment in rape cases.

The conviction of the influential Dera chief had triggered violence in the state and around 30 people were killed in police firing. After that incident, he was provided Z category security.

In January 2019, he had again sentenced the Dera chief to life imprisonment for journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati’s murder. Jagdeep, who also is a special judge of the NIA court, had recently acquitted Swami Aseemanand and three other accused in Samjhauta blasts case after passing scathing remarks on the NIA for its failure to establish the guilt of the accused.

Drawing an adverse inference against the NIA, Jagdeep had observed: “The best evidence, which could have clinched the issue, was withheld by the prosecution.”

He was deputed as special CBI judge Haryana at Panchkula on April 12, 2016. The tenure of a special CBI judge is normally 3 years but they can be deputed on the same post for up to five years. In July 2018, he was designated as special NIA judge
