Chandigarh:

The Punjab and Haryana high court has given the local authorities a dressing down for failing to answer questions related to traffic and parking chaos.

Four officers—the municipal commissioner, senior superintendent of police (traffic), special secretary (who is also chief engineer), and chief architect and town planner—must appear in the high court on Friday to file a reply on the affidavit put up at the last hearing. During the resumed hearing, the high court observed that there was chaos in the markets, as the rule of one-way traffic was not being enforced.

The court observed that vehicles were still being parked on footpaths because the UT police punished the violators “selectively”. The SSP (traffic) will have to explain what happened to the plan of installing red-light-jumping scanners at 40 intersections. The gadget reads the registration number plate of the offending vehicle for automatic generation of e-challan. Police had submitted that these 40 points would be selected based on population density. Police have been told to increase traffic fines for certain offences by Rs 100 for every present buck.
