More than 40 per cent seats in various medical colleges offering AYUSH courses across the country are lying vacant in the current academic session. In Haryana, over 200 seats are yet to be filled.
According to the National Federation of Homeopathic Medical Colleges of India, the Union government’s ‘confusing’ circular about the eligibility criteria has resulted in low admissions to AYUSH courses.

This year for the first time, the Centre made NEET mandatory for undergraduate admissions. However, the federation claims that in view of the non-clarity over whether NEET was mandatory only for MBBS and BDS courses, students were left in the lurch.

“There was a lot of confusion over the applicability of NEET for AYUSH courses, as the circular did not give any clarity. However, the authorities in April issued directions to the institutions to make admissions based only on NEET ranking. Owing to this confusion, students took admissions in other science streams and a sizeable number of seats are still vacant,” Dr Suresh K Nandal, secretary general of the federation, told The Tribune.

“In Haryana, of the 930 seats in various colleges under the Shri Krishna Ayush University (SKAU), Kurukshetra, only 712 have been filled. Even as the Punjab and Haryana High Court on November 12 directed the university to invite the candidates who had not qualified NEET and are interested in seeking admission to AYUSH courses, 218 seats remain vacant,” he added.

Nandal said of the 9,000 seats in AYUSH courses across the country, there were no takers for 4,000. He said the federation members on Tuesday met the Union Secretary, AYUSH, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, demanding to extend the admissions till December 31.

“The federation has no objection of fixing NEET as the eligibility test, but it should have been clarified to the students,” he added.

Later, a Union Ministry circular to the state government read ‘in order to be eligible for admission, a candidate shall obtain minimum 35 percentile in NEET 2018.
