Mumbai:

This is one swipe Virat Kohli’s fans are unlikely to applaud. The man rated as the best batsman in the world embroiled himself in a fresh controversy when in response to a cricket lover’s criticism of his batting, he put out a video message saying “if you like other countries, then you should not live in India.”

On a brief break during which he has skipped the T20I series against the West Indies, Kohli recorded the video as part of promotions for an app launched on his 30th birthday, touted as an effort to bring fans “closer” to the Indian captain.

In one of the video segments, Kohli reacts to disapproving tweets sent by critics. One of them had commented that he preferred English and Australian batsmen and thought Kohli was “overrated.” Kohli replied saying he shouldn’t live in India then and ought to get his priorities straight for “loving other countries”.

Kohli first read out the tweet that said, “Overrated batsman and personally I see nothing special in his batting. I enjoy watching English and Australian batsmen more than these Indians.” And in response, he said, “OK, I don’t think you should live in India then ... you should go and live somewhere else, no? Why are you living in our country and loving other countries? I don’t mind you not liking me but I don’t think you should live in our country and like other things. Get your priorities right.”

His statements drew an adverse reaction from the BCCI top brass and provoked heavy trolling, with many criticizing the skipper for his “attitude” and “arrogance”, and comparing his behaviour to that of a politician
