TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Shimla:

For the first time, on Karva Chauth, women prisoners would be allowed to meet their husbands and break the fast. DGP (Prisons and Correctional Services) Somesh Goyal said that those applying would be allowed to meet either personally or through video-conferencing. There are 84 women prisoners lodged in 14 prisons in the state.

Earlier, the prisons department used to provide “Sargi” to women prisoners observing the Karva Chauth fast but going a step further the department has decided to ensure the presence of their husbands either through video-conferencing or personally.

According to Goyal, the facility of meeting through video conferencing or personally would be provided only to those inmates who would submit applications for this. Through the help of prisons department software, Jailvarta, female inmates could break the fast in the presence of their husbands online. He said those husbands who want to remain personally present would be allowed entry only for the time of breaking fast.

He said that already instructions have been issued to all the jail superintendents to accept the applications to facilitate such meetings for Karva Chauth. Prisons department of Himachal Pradesh has also taken many innovating steps for the welfare of prisoners. Hundreds of prisoners serving sentences in different jails of Himachal Pradesh are not only keeping themselves busy by engaging themselves in activities like baking, making furniture, weaving shawls and stitching, but they also earning wages to support their families.

In 2015, around 300-400 jail inmates were paid wages to the tune of Rs 5 lakh but last year 3,000 inmates were paid Rs 1.14 crore as wages. Prisons and Correctional Services Department of state has started the initiative “Har Haath ko Kaam” under which attempts is being made to provide work to inmates according to their choice.
