BJP reinstates leader who offered ₹10cr to ‘kill actor’
BJP (Haryana) has rejected resignation sent by you; as such you now deliver responsibilities as earlier and serve as party state spokesperson. LETTER FROM THE OFFICE OF HARYANA BJP CHIEF

GURUGRAM : Nearly a year after offering a ₹10 crore bounty to anyone who would behead ‘Padmaavat’ actor Deepika Padukone and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Suraj Pal Amu has been reinstated as the Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) chief media coordinator, with the additional responsibility of spokesperson.

■ Suraj Pal Amu, also national secretary of Rajput organisation Shree Karni Sena, had resigned after Haryana BJP sent him a notice asking to explain his controversial remarks.
Amu had resigned from his position on November 29 last year. He had later offered to leave the party.

The party has rejected his resignation and asked him to resume responsibilities of chief media coordinator with the additional post of spokesperson. The office of Subhash Barala, Haryana’s BJP chief, announced this in a letter issued on October 5.

“BJP (Haryana) has rejected the resignation sent by you; as such you now deliver responsibilities as earlier and serve as party state spokesperson,” the letter stated.

Amu, who is also national secretary of the Shree Karni Sena, had resigned after the Haryana BJP sent him a notice asking him to explain his controversial remarks, inciting people to behead Padukone and Bhansali.

In his resignation letter to Barala over Whatsapp, Gurugram resident Amu said he was upset over chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar allegedly skipping a

meeting with representatives of the Karni Sena who wanted to meet him to demand a ban on the movie in the state.

“I was hurt with the treatment meted out to Rajput leaders. That’s why I resigned. Now, the party has asked me to resume the responsibilities,” Amu said.

A case was filed against him at the Sector 29 police station in November 2017. He was later arrested on January 26, 2018, in Gurugram on charges of breaching peace in the city after a mob attacked a school bus with 25 students on board at Bhondsi area.

When Khattar, who was in Gurugram on Monday, was asked whether the party’s displeasure with Amu was done with, he evaded the question.

Protests against the period drama ‘Padmaavat’ had been held in 2017, alleging that it distorted historical facts. The movie was originally named ‘Padmavati’, after a mythical queen in Rajasthan, but was renamed following the protests.
