22 cops charged with murder in Nuh firing
GURURGAM: Twenty-two policemen and 15 others have been booked under charges of murder in the death of a 23-year-old man in Puhana area of Nuh district on Tuesday evening.

A mahapanchayat of 36 communities from Punhana area of Nuh sent a memorandum, listing their ■ demands, to Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Sahib, was allegedly caught in a cross-fire between villagers in Patakpur and police teams from Haryana and Uttarakhand, which was there to arrest a wanted criminal.

Police said the father of the deceased has filed a complaint, naming police officials, including the ones from Uttarakhand police. “We have booked 22 policemen and 15 others after the villagers complained against the police personnel on Thursday. The case has been registered under Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Arms Act at the Punhana police station on Thursday. No arrests have been made yet,” said DSP (Punhana) Ashok Kumar.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was also set up on Thursday to probe the death of Sahib.

The police have maintained that they found the body in a field when they were taking cover from the firing by villagers, but villagers claimed that Sahib was killed in firing by the police.

On Thursday, a mahapanchayat of 36 communities in Punhana sent a memorandum to Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Nuh SP Nazneen Bhasin also received a copy of the memorandum, in which the villagers have demanded an enhanced compensation of ₹50 lakh from the Haryana and Uttarakhand governments, arrest of police officers involved in the shootout, magisterial enquiry and a government job for the wife of the deceased.

Villagers refused to claim the body, which is lying at the Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, on Thursday as well. The mahapanchayat also demanded that the post-mortem exam must be conducted either at Ram Manohar Lal hospital or Safdarjung in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, Nazneen Bhasin met the family of the deceased and villagers and assured them of a fair investigation. She said the SIT would submit a report to her.

“I have instituted an SIT for careful and detailed investigation,” Bhasin said.

Police said Sahib was found lying in a pool of blood in the fields where they took cover to escape the firing by villagers when they had gone to the village to arrest one Shabbir Khan—a robbery accused and a wanted criminal. The rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead.

However, Khan’s family alleged he was murdered by the police team.

Saheed Khan, father of the victim , said, “I had also gone to Patakpur village with my son. I saw police firing at my son. I am an eyewitness to the case. After the incident, I found 9mm 2ZKF09 cartridges from the spot where my son was found lying. I can identify the cartridge as I am familiar with such things.”

Sahib’s relatives said the deceased, who hailed from Naheda village in Punhana, was innocent and worked as a truck driver. They added that there was not a single case registered against him anywhere in the state
