CFSL report confirms bullets fired by Hindu outfit leaders hit 2 Dalits
Phagwara Clash | Chargesheet Filed; Police Want All 6 To Be Tried For Murder

The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) at Chandigarh has confirmed that bullets injuring two Dalit youths, of which one died later, during the April 13 violent clash between two groups, were fired from the licensed revolvers of four arrested Hindu outfit leaders.

However, it is yet to be established from which 0.32 bore revolver the bullet that hit deceased Yashwant alias Bobby (19) was fired.

Based on the CFSL report, the Kapurthala police have filed the challan before the trial court against all six arrested Hindu outfit leaders charging them with murder apart from under the SC/ST Act.

After the arrest of Shiv Sena state vice-president Inderjit Karwal, Hindu Shiv Sena and Pawan Putar Dal national president Shive Batta, Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha mandal president Raju Chahal and All India Hindu Suraksha Samiti Punjab president Deepak Bhardwaj on April 14, police had recovered their revolvers.

These revolvers were sent to the CFSL at Chandigarh, along with bullet shells recovered from the spot. The one that doctors removed from the head Bobby was also sent to CFSL.

Head of the 3-member SIT investigating clashes SP Jaskaran Singh Teja told TOI as of now it was not confirmed whose bullet had hit the deceased.

“As shape of some of the bullets was distorted, the forensic experts would clarify in their evidence during the course of case trial as to who is the main accused of murder.” However, he added the CFSL report says all bullets in the clash were fired from the licensed revolvers of the four arrested right wing Hindu leaders.

“All revolvers have been found in working condition,” he added. Asked as to how the shape of bullets was distorted, the SIT head said, “I cannot reveal this as it is part of the investigation.”

He said the SIT has filed the challan before the trial court before completion of the 90-day period otherwise the accused would have become entitled for bail.

Chargesheet for murder has also been filed against Tinka and Sunny Batta who were arrested some days later. One of the accused in the case and Karwal’s son, Jimmy is still on the run. The other challan has also been presented in the trial court against six dalit youth with milder charges.

Clash had taken place between the Hindu rightwing activists and a Dalit group on the issue of renaming Gol Chowk as Samvidhan Chowk.

Bobby was hit by a bullet in his head in the incident and had died in Ludhiana’s Dayanand Medical College and Hospital on April 29. Kulwinder too had sustained bullet injuries.

The clash took place after the Hindu right-wing activists had installed a board at the Chowk with Dr B R Ambedkar’s picture on it.

After clash, tension had prevailed in Phagwara and surrounding areas, and internet services were suspended in entire Doaba region
