Nearly three weeks after animal rights activists rescued nine starving dogs from his bungalow, dentist Dr Virendra Pal Singh Bedi, 48, has filed an application in a Kalyan court seeking custody of the canines.

The dogs were rescued on June 21 from Bedi’s house in Godrej Hill, Kalyan, after one of his neighbours tweeted the photos of the malnourished canines of various breeds, tagging Union minister and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi. Gandhi’s office immediately contacted the director of Benevolent Association for Welfare (Benevolent AW), Chetan Sharma, and the local Khadakpada police. The rescued dogs – three Siberian Huskies, three Golden Retrievers, a French Mastiff, a Dogo Argentino and a Saint Bernard pup – had, all, been discovered in a terrible state, animal rights activists claimed. They were malnourished and had been eating their own faeces, they said.

In his application, Bedi has claimed that the feeble condition of the dogs was due to the vegetarian diet they had been put on for the last few months because of the absence of one of his caretakers.

At present, the dogs are being looked after by the Bhumi Jeevdaya Samvardhan Trust, Turbhe.

Sharma told Mirror, “Bedi has refuted the allegation that the dogs were starved. However, a vegetarian diet alone would not explain the condition that the dogs were found in. When we rescued the dogs, their bones were visible and they were eating their own excreta.”

The police said that Bedi had two male and nine female dogs and that he used to breed them and sell the puppies. Khadakpada police had registered a non-cognisable offence against Bedi under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

“The dogs are in a very poor condition and they have multiple health issues,” Ashraf Hussain, co-founder of AAC (Animal Adoption and Care), told Mirror. “Three of them are in a particularly bad condition with multiple problems, including tic fever and anaemia. They are not responding to any names. Their condition is so fragile that it has been impossible to even conduct a full panel of tests.’’ Mirror tried to contact Bedi for comment, but he was not available
