It is celebration time at this village as Amit Panghal, 22-year-old son of a local farmer, has won laurels by claiming silver medal in the 46-49 kg category boxing event at the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast in Australia.

Amit’s parents Vijender Singh and Usha Rani are jubilant over the feat of their son. “We are so happy that our son has won a medal for the country. It is a matter of honour for our family and village. Amit’s success is the result of his dedicated efforts and grace of Almighty. We are proud of him,” they said.

Amit, who had recently joined the Army as Junior Commissioned Officer, attributed his success to the persistent efforts and guidance of his coach Anil Dhankhar, blessings of his parents and support of his elder brother.

Amit disclosed that he was prompted to enter the sports arena by his elder brother Ajay, also in the Army. Asked about his next target, Amit asserted that he wanted to bring a medal in the Asian Games, while Olympics was the obvious aim of any sportsperson. Born on October 16, 1995, Amit started boxing in 2009 while he was in school. In the same year, he bagged the gold medal at the 25th Sub-Junior National Boxing Championship in Aurangabad.

He won silver medals at the Sub-Junior National Championships in Chennai in 2010 and in Pune in 2011. Amit represented Haryana in the 45th Junior Boxing Championship in Patiala in 2012.

He won gold medal in the first Dr BR Ambedkar All-India Men Boxing Championship in Vishakhapatnam the same year. Amit won gold medals at several inter-university tournaments and was adjudged best boxer in several state-level championships.

He represented India in the 2017 Asian Championship, in which he won bronze medal. He bagged top honours at several other national and international sports events.
